I have a 4ft 75ga tank with 2 ai sol on it now. The coverage is lacking when I get the light to the color temp I like. I was thinking about putting 4 black boxes on it or sprining Tor maxspect razor 300w, but 800$ is a bit much. I could stomach 500-600$, but I have not kept up with modern fixtures and stuff. What brands line up there? 4' for 500$?

Looking for suggestions.

Have you considered using the aquatic life hybrid and continuing to run your AI sols?

I have a 4’ 75 gallon also and have had pretty good coverage with my two hydra 26 hd, but I think I am going to supplement it with an aquatic life hybrid fixture. Check it out. It is made to work with AI, kessel and radion I believe. Then you can pick the bulbs you want to use. I believe the fixture starts at $299.99 for the 48” unit.

I picked up the Reef Breeders Photon V2 48" from Chris and upgraded it to the V2+ and I absolutely love it. This is an amazing light for the price. Extremely powerful very nice styling, comes with the ability to hang or use the included tank stands, and with the V2+ upgrade, highly configurable so you can easily set it to match the CoralLab configurations depending on what you have in your tank. Here is a sample pic running a mix between the CoralLab AB+ and LPS color settings but I am currently only running the blues at 40%, whites at 17% and Red/green at 9%. Once I get the replacement wand in for the par meter in a few days I'll be able to post numbers.

The 48" runs 650 and is worth every penny. Far cheaper than a pair of AI Hydras, and has better components than the black box units ie Cree/Semi LEDs etc. I looked at the specs and they are using the exact same LED's that Ai uses for all but the whites. Ai uses 6.5K Cree's and these are 5K Cree's.

Cell phone pics don't do it justice.

I do have a small acro frag that I got from WWC that was a beautiful tri-color green, blue, and purple (top right side in between the sea-fan and the paloma) . It turned completely brown in my old tank under my old lights and started bleaching. It's been under this light for two weeks now and the green color is starting to return and the bleaching has stopped progressing. I have also seen improved color on all my corals with increased polyp extension as well.

I put together a spreadsheet that is broken down each channel color and time slot for an easy reference for programming. Let me know if you get this light and I'll send it to you.

Yes very cheap on ebay or amazon - if you are looking for reasonable cost lighting.

The black boxes definitely don’t lack par and grow coral, but they do have a bit of a spot light effect.

Wait for the Gen 5 Radions. You owe it to your tank and yourself! :bounce:

I just tell my wife, “babe we have to have this for the coral to grow well.”:bowl:

Then i man up and work some overtime when I can get it.

I am leaning toward 3 or 4 Mars aqua.

The Mars lights will do in a pinch, but they are very limited on capabilities. No real way to set individual channels, or ramp up/down profiles. You have two dials one for the blues and one for the W,R,G channel and that's about it. They will grow coral, but their lack of control-ability hinders them. Not to mention the light dispersal on these isn't all that great. They create a very narrow beam almost like a laser of sorts where you have a very bad hot spot directly under them, but the light intensity falls off very quickly as you move just a few inches away. And to get a decent light coverage across the entire sand bed you need to mount them at least 12" or more above the waterline.

I got the Par readings on the ReefBreeders Photon V2+. The light is currently mounted 8.5" above the waterline on the supplied light stand, power output set at 45% on the UV, Royal, and Atinic blue, 17% on white, and 9% on Red and 6% Green they are as follows.

On the sand bed of the at 20" depth I'm getting 125 Par directly under the light across the entire length.
At 5" off center towards the front on sand bed the numbers fall to 95-105 Par across the length of the tank.
Along the back the readings at 5" from center the readings were 75 Par across the length of the tank.
At the front next to the glass I was getting 75-80 PAR with 65 in the very corners and 65-70 across the back and 45 in the back corners. The back glass is painted black so the PAR readings tends to be lower.

At the top of the rockwork 2/3 up on both right and left sides about 6" from the surface I am getting 180-200 Par from left side to the right since the right side is a couple inches higher.
Moving to the front 5" the PAR reading fell slightly to 160-180 across the length of the tank.
Moving to the back 5" the PAR reading match the front.
Against the glass 6" down from the surface the PAR readings fell to 90 in the front and 70 in the back.

Overall the PAR readings were fairly consistent across the tank at any given depth I tested with a slight fall off at the ends of the tank, but this is the same as most LED lighting systems on the market.

Hydra’s are good!

There’s another LED if you don’t like the radions that’s very good. It’s called Illumagic. They have a few really nice dependable fixtures.
