I had to take my Clarkii clown out of the main tank because he wouldn't stop harassing and biting the fins of my new yellow tang. Recently he developed a terrible sore on his mouth, and it appears to affect the inside and outside. He can't seem to totally close his mouth, and he is not eating. The tank had not seen a fish in at least 6 months, so I think I can rule out any parasite that needs a host. I'm leaning towards a bacterial infection, but my wife thought it looked sort of like a tumor. Any suggestions?

That doesn't look like it feels very good!

You don’t think the tang got him in the face with the tail barb do you? I had a purple tang for 1 day (sad, velvet killed it over night) and it killed my clownfish by tail whipping it. Yellows seem to be a good deal calmer than purples but they can do some serious damage with tail whips. I hope your clown gets better! He’s a really pretty one

Thanks. I don't think that's what happened. Actually, I kept hoping the tang would whip him a little - not enough to hurt him badly, but to get him to stop harassing the tang - but he just swam away, despite being a little larger than the clown. The sore did not develop until he had been in the QT about a month and a half, so that's why I figure a bacterial infection is most likely.

Sadly, he lost the battle last night. He seemed to be getting better with the Kanaplex and Metroplex treatment, and yesterday he seemed to be moving his mouth more than he had been, but he still didn't eat yesterday. I guess he ran out of energy before he was able to heal enough to eat.

I only had him a little over 4 years, and the previous owner may have had him up to 2 years, but I have no idea if he was wild caught or captive bred. He was already pretty full-sized (about 4 inches) when I got him, so who knows how old he was, but he was the only clown I've had that didn't live 12 years or more.

That could be a bacterial infection or uronema (which can remain latent in a tank sometimes).

I recommend treating with Kanaplex + Metroplex in a QT. In addition, daily baths using Ruby Reef Rally might help.

Looks like a bacterial infection to me. Look how it's starting to discolor his entire mouth.

Frank...any update on this fish. He should clear right up on some antibiotics.
