    I Love Skimmer Maintenance

    Not!

How often do you clean your skimmer?

I do the cups weekly and the body about once a month.

The cup whenever it gets a good amount of gunk in it, and never for the body. Not sure why you would clean the body. Mine never gets dirty.

    I Love Skimmer Maintenance

Clean off worm tubes, sponges and anything else that decides it wants to grow on or in the skimmer + on one of the skimmers getting to the pump is a pita. Pulling the whole skimmer is easier.

I clean the cup every few day to a week. I just took my whole skimmer out last week and gave it a good cleaning, about 6 months to a year I try and clean the whole skimmer.

So far in 5 months I have cleaned the main tower to my skimmer once. Mostly when it gets a good coat of algae buildup on the inside facing the fuge light. The cup gets a fairly decent weekly cleaning with hot water from the kitchen sink the hand sprayer. I was planning on doing maintenance cleaning on my skimmer and return pumps this weekend. Got to get the system all prepped for the tank sitter next month when I take the kiddos to...

Id say about once every two weeks. Nothing is more manly than scrubbing fish poop with your bare hands.
I donít clean my skimmer every day, but when I do,... I clean it bare-handed.

I wear these when I am doing any maintenance on the tanks and love them. They also work great for cat box cleaning, or cleaning up various accidents or presents the animal decide to leave.

If I am moving corals or using super glue something else that requires my reaching into the tank repeatedly I will wrap a rubber band around my wrist a couple times to keep the water out. Works fairly well for that. I also wear these if I need to handle an urchin or any other critter with poisonous spines. Granted they can easily pierce the nitrile glove, but I found if I am careful I can move them from the trap to where ever without issues.
