I run a toothbrush through the neck every couple days. Empty the cup as necessary.

I agree sir! I will have skimmer sludge up to my elbows if I don't pay attention to what I'm doing.

Obviously. The fluoride residue is an excellent cleaning agent for the skimmer neck. And the residual organic matter and bacterial colonies the skimmer imparts on the toothbrush do a lot of good things with helping break down plaque on my teeth.

I used to be good at cleaning/maintaining the skimmer cup till the stupid apex float switch came around.
I have a large waste collector with the float switch so now I barely do it once a week - but I'm really good at maintaining the skimmer pump clean since it's the heart of the system.

I think I’m gonna run skimmerless for at least 6 months on this new system. I may try to go forever. My systems run super clean. Plus....I might even try bare bottom. Still debating.

I know what you mean. On my old tank I had a big wast container with a float switch and and neck cleaner that was hooked to my Apex. I maybe cleaned it once a month and when I did was it nasty. Fish poop would be supper thick on the swabber
