    new 2.9 gallon pico reef

    Hey all,

Putting together a tank for work if it turns out nice. Work for a Japanese company and when you go over there they have tons of these small tanks but planted.

Started with an ultum tank, got a VIV skimmer, really impressed with the packaging, and a hydor pico.

What do you guys think I should do for lighting? Been going pretty cheap so far.

Just some coral and maybe a neon gobi.

Still can't find a light I like. A80 is the only one close but its kinda heavy on the glass.

This is a great light for the price. Fairly light too.

Something to consider when you're looking at lights is how well the colors are blended. Some LED lights aren't blended well so you get splotches of white, violet, blue, etc instead of one consistent color of light. With a small tank, the "disco ball" effect will be more apparent than in a big tank since everything is scaled down. Some people like the disco ball effect and some don't. Kessils are known for their smooth blend of color so it's a good choice if you don't like the disco effect. If you want that effect, look for lights with diodes that have more space between them.

I have a pair of these on a 20L and they are decent inexpensive lights and do provide surprisingly good PAR levels. As long as your tank is rimless the mounts work well. If it's a rimmed tank you need something to fill the gap on the inside of the tank or the mount will not work. I used a pair of Ozarka water bottle caps on each light for the mounts so they would work. Also getting the right color spectrum is a tad bit challenging with them. You can turn up the overall intensity on both channels and set the whites and blues individually, however if you leave the two channels matched the color appears to be better set for a freshwater or planted tank. You have to drop the white channel intensity down. To attempt to match the look of my 75G with a Photon v2, for my 20L dwarf lion tank I have the whites reduced by 6 steps and the blues by 3 from full intensity. By steps I mean tapping either the + or - buttons once the light is at full 100% to adjust each channel separately. At this setting they produce about 100 par on the bed of a 20L directly under the light.
