Passing through Houston and plan on stopping at a couple stores... suggestions?

Passing through Houston this weekend and plan on hitting a couple of the LFSís. Iíve gone to FJW and Oceanlife and plan on stopping by those two again. Others, like Fish Gallery for instance, didnít have much the last time I went and I donít think I will make a stop there again.

Stocking a new 120g with coral, so any place that has nice (and inexpensive) frags would be places Iíd like to go check out!

Unfortunately, Iím headed to San Antonio and taking I-10. Iím willing to go a little out of the way, but donít have the time to spend traveling all over Houston.

So any help narrowing down the destinations would be helpful!

Those 2 stores are going to do you right! Both have lots of inventory, you could check out City Pets as well on your way out and then just jump on the tollway north to I10 west. Hope you have safe travels!

Yep, Those two are your best bet. FJW is always a favorite.

Infinity fish has stepped it up the last few months. Fjw and oceanlife for sure. Citypets, infinity, and adg are worth the detour. In San Antonio you can go to aquarium design on San Pedro. It is pretty good if you are passing by.

Coming from SA on I10 you will pass by Cinco Ranch Aquariums off 99.

Depending which way you go you can hit FWJ and Urban Aquatics off I610 & 290 as theyíre relatively close.

Other options are Oceanlife and City Pets which are in the middle or Infinity and Fish Bowl on the outskirts.

Aquarium World on 290 has some rare gems on a semi-frequent basis as well. While corals are not their main focus there, you can sometimes find something really nice for a good price. My most recent find was a beautiful hammer coral with 9-10 heads on it. It has some of the most intense green tentacles with near indigo tips on it I have ever seen. I think I only paid $50 for it and I found one similar to it online for like 30 per head... so they are work swinging in for a quick second on the way to FJW's.

Big fan of Oceanlife....everything I get there did very well in my tank and the prices were very good. I got to know the guys at Fish Gallery in The Woodlands and they buy back my chaeto for store credit but that is out of your way from I10.

Wanted to drop back in and let y’all know how the trip went. Driving through Houston on Friday, we made a stop at Oceanlife and FJW.

Last time we had been in Houston was for Reefcurrents, after which we stopped by FJW, Fish Gallery and Oceanlife. On that trip to FJW, I saw a LPS(cynarina) that I really liked, but I couldn’t justify spending the $ after having spent enough at Reefcurrents! I regretted not being able to bring it home, so I told myself that if it were still there when I stopped by again, I would go ahead and buy it!

Sure enough, when we stopped at FJW that Friday, the Cynarina was still there... but when I inquired about the price, it was $50 higher than the last time. I’ve been impressed with FJW, having stopped there ever since it was just a small room behind the liquor store many years ago... but that interaction left a bad taste. I was told it was because of the ban and that they can’t get them in anymore... that may be so, but I wasn’t about to pay an extra $50!

We kept going toward San Antonio and arrived late Friday night. Saturday the plan was to go to the Alamo (the g/f had never been and wanted to go), so it was a surprise when she offered to go visit a couple of the LFS’s in San Antonio! I figured we wouldn’t have time, so didn’t want to press my luck! lol

We ended up going to elegant reef, salty fish aquarium and stopped by aquarium design, but it was closed for the day. Picked up a few frags from both stores and then after getting a history lesson in, headed back toward Houston. Sunday we visited reeftopia’s house and picked up several items and then met a couple other members for a couple other frags. Made it by Urban aquatics, who had a couple nice frags that came home with us and then stopped once more by Oceanlife and got a couple of the $10 sps frags. Unfortunately We didn’t have time to visit infinity fish, so that is on the “to-do” list for the next trip.

All in all a good trip; all frags made it home safely and I only had one acro RTN after dipping. It was one I had received from reeftopia, so a fresh cut. I ended up cutting the frag and so far the part I cut off has been doing well, so all good!

Thank you all for the suggestions. I’m keeping an eye on the forums for when I pass through again!
