    Battery Back Up

    Hello Marshians

Needing some advise on battery back up for my 40 gallon breeder. Not sure what to look for or direction to go. Anyone have any tips or recommendations? I have 2 Jabeao Wave Makers and an Aquamaxx HOB skimmer plus lights. No sump at this time. Thank you in advance.

Are you looking for long term, short term, or just for emergency purposes now that hurricane season is upon us?

I've seen alot of folks suggest using an inverter to utilize their car batteries to run their aquariums. But in all honesty I have never personally looked into it.

I am looking for emergency purposes - primarily because it is hurricane season. I live in an apartment so not sure having a generator is allowed. Hope this clarifies things a bit more.

Can your jeboa wave makers take a 12v input when there is a loss of power?

You can run an inverter if not, off a deep cycle battery but the conversion from DC->AC does waste some of batteries energy.

Not sure but maybe this will work if you don't want to diy..

ReefBreeders has a battery backup unit on their site that is designed to work specifically with Jebao pumps. Really great price too. I'm considering getting one for my wavemakers.

For the HOB filter, the most cost effective thing there is a large computer UPS unit. That'll run you about $130 for a good sized one. You also want to look into getting a 1Kw 2-cycle generator. They run about $130 +/- and many will go for 7-9 hours per gallon of mix gas. This will allow you to recharge the battery packs during prolonged outages.

Only one thing you need to prepare is Backup air pump with 2 D battery. That is it.

It depends on the size of the tank. For smaller tanks this usually works fairly well in conjunction with daily small water changes. For larger tanks however you would need multiple air pumps to get enough water movement and in the tank and to break the surface tension for gas exchange. If you run DC wavemaker pumps a backup battery like the IceCap or similar for the Jebao's will successfully operate a small powerhead for upwards of 48 hours before needing a recharge. Connecting say a Jebao PP-4 wave maker to it and point it up to the surface on pulse will definitely do the trick.

I picked one of these little battery packs up from FJW on Monday and opened it up to see what all is inside. It's literally a small 12v sealed battery and a small circuit board that allows you to connect two 12/24v DC pumps to it. In the event of a power outage it will provide power to the devices connected with no loss of power until the battery drains. The simplicity of this battery unit is unlike computer UPS units there is not a voltage inverter so nearly the entire battery capacity can be used on the pumps connected instead of having to power the electronics and inverter on top of the devices connected to it. Also because this battery system is so simple you can modify it with a much higher capacity 12v battery to it and increase it's run time significantly. Once I get the second battery for it I'll post up a how to on setting it up as well as modding it for the additional battery capacity. My goal with doing this is to provide sustained power to the main return pump as well as a single wavemaker for at least 48 hours before I would have to resort to using a generator.
