I use this in emergencies and based on my apex will easily run the tank and my refrig if the heaters done kick in while the refrig is running. The Yamaha lists for $1500 but you would be surprised how many used gennys are in the Gulf coast area! Keep those running watts below 80% and the generator will last a very long time.

    The other important thing is you CANNOT run sensitive equipment with a cheap non-inverter type generator. I cannot stress this enough. Lost a refrigerator during Ike to a non-inverter Generac genny and no way in hell I will hook up my Apex to one. The inverter cleans up the power so you can charge a phone or laptop or an Apex. You could use the old style to run a battery charger and then run off battery but there is some loss there as well. By the way I LOVED that Generac 4000 generator...was a real workhorse and started on the first pull as long as it didn't sit too long between uses.

    Sorry to get off topic. I could talk for a while about old gas...the crappy ethanol in our fuels...running the genny out of gas....
    Great info Robert! I bought an inverter generator... It was nice knowing I could plug my phone into it without blowing up my phone. Plus, it ran forever on 1 gallon of gas. It was way more expensive though than the regular generators but I figured I could use it for other purposes such as tailgating or camping one day.

With a small battery backup unit it will provide power to one or more DC pumps for multiple hours until you can get the generator up and running. This would come into play if there is a temporary power outage during the day when you're at work, or if a bad storm is rolling through and may not be the ideal time to be outside fiddling with a generator. That's why having a small battery backup that will take over the instant a loss of power happens giving you time to act.

    My situation works well with a generator combined with several battery powered air pumps. The pumps will get me through the immediate until the weather gets better and I can run the generator.

    I do have a unique schedule of working from home and having a good reefing buddy down the street when I go on vacations that can watch the tank.

    The battery powered options are nice to have for the reasons you mentioned. My only knock on them is that they have a limited life span, like UPSs, and will have to be replaced periodically. $100 every 2-4 years is definitely good insurance but I'd rather put that money towards a generator that has a longer life span.

    To each their own but those are the reasons I went with a generator instead of a battery back up.

    I really like battery backups as WELL as a generator! I have/had a UPS on the tank that will run it is short time and this will give me time to get the portable generator in place, fire it up, and run a power cord to the tank. There is no doubt that batteries have a relatively short life which is why I dont like to spend much money on them.

    I only use 3 Air pumps for my 220g tank and it shut out all the power of my big UPS backups in one night.
    If you want to run wavemaker, skimmer, plus lights, how many battery backups can handle for one night?

    It really depends on how you have ity setup. If you're relying on standard computer UPS backups, then the best you can expect is a few hours with a low draw DC pump. Computer UPS units were never intended to provide long duration power to the devices connected to them. They are there to provide just enough reserve time to prevent system damage and/or data loss in short duration power outages, and to allow you to safely shut down your hardware. They also use a significant percentage of the battery reserve just powering the small 12/24v DC battery(s) to 110v AC. So when using them on an aquarium is OK in short term outages as well as protecting the more sensitive components from power surges they just cannot provide the sustained power a reef tank requires. The only way to increase the run-time on a standard computer UPS is to modify it and increase the battery reserve from the tiny 8-10AH that is common for most of these units to at least 70AH deep cycle battery. Even then you would be hard pressed to provide enough reserve time to power everything on your system especially lights and heaters as you're looking at a range of 200-500 watts or more just for these alone. Provided the UPS inverter is a 12v unit you would need at a minimum of 4 to 6 70AH 12V batteries wired in parallel to provide the reserve to power all the components listed.

    A much better and easier to implement option is provide short term backup for less critical systems such as lights, skimmer, and heaters as your tank can run without these for several hours and suffer little to no effects on your tank inhabitants. Corals and fish can easily go 2-3 days with little to no light before you have to provide light. For the heaters, it all depends on how big the tank is, and the ambient temp. The larger the tank and warmer the room, the slower the temperature falls.

    Personally I think where one should focus the attention on is the main pump and/or circulation wave maker units. Co2 levels could climb very rapidly in a heavily stocked tank, and within a couple hours the more sensitive fish could become stressed and even die. With DC pumps now readily available setting up a battery backup for these is far simpler a task and can easily provide upwards of 48 or more hours of emergency power to the pumps with little to no modifications in some cases. For example the CoralBox (Jebao) battery unit can easily power a pair PP-8 series (Current EFlux 1050) or similar dc wave pump for upwards of 24 hours. These units are easily scalable or if you are up for it, can be modified to accept external power from a second battery pack increasing the reserve time to 72 or more hours. With pumps that require 24v to operate like some of the EcoTech's and such, you can wire in a voltage booster that ups the 12v to 24-36v depending on the requirements of your main pump(s). and tie them in as well.
