    Worst day ever

Well, it's among the worst anyway. Out of the blue, our 300 gallon reef tank started leaking at a pretty decent pace. We were first alerted to this by a water sensor tied to the house alarm, and we couldn't get it to shut up because the batteries on the keypads have expired. Finally the alarm company was able to turn it off at their end.

Then we spent the next 7 or 8 hours tearing down the tank, me doing most of the tank stuff and my wife manning the towels and shop vac. Thank goodness I still have my 90 gallon set up as a QT, along with a 20 and 10, and got out the 100 gallon tub I used when I moved and filled it with water from the 300. Between all those and the 150, I was able to get everyone out and distributed so no one tank will be over crowded, although I will be amazed if I don't lose some corals. The biggest challenge was catching the leopard wrasse - taking the sand out one handful at a time until I found her. It was like panning for gold, except panning for a wrasse.

I was just starting to think that the tank was getting settled in. A number of corals that had struggled during the move a year and a half ago were starting to do really well.

Now the big decision - do I try to fix this tank, do I buy another Marineland Deep Dimension tank, or do I go with a custom tank that will probably cost a gazillion dollars.

Go for the long term plan. I just got my Planet Aquariums 160 Gallong Rimless Starfire tank and it is gorges. I plan on keeping this tank for years to come and I am not afraid of this tank ever leaking by the quality of the seals.

    Sorry about your tank

Not yet. I will try tomorrow to figure out where exactly the leak is.

Yeah, I have heard they don't have the best reputation, although I have had my 150DD for 6 and a half years with no issues.

I have had the 300 almost 2 years, and the person I bought it from had it about 2 years - I wonder if it has just been moved one too many times.

That's terrible frankc! Luckily you had the QT and all the extra tubs/tanks to get some temporary setups going to save everything.

From what I hear, there was a certain number of years where the Marineland DD tanks had a high rate of failure, not sure if it was due to the silicone used or the building process but supposedly they corrected that in the more recent builds. Perhaps yours predated their fix.

Boy, soon as I started reading your thread the DD300 is what I thought before I even read it. I believe there is a thread on RC or R2R of a guy who had it happen twice...same tank...first replaced under warranty. And I have seen several more threads from other users with the same experience. Sorry to hear it but glad you had room for everyone.

I would check a couple of your LFS....I recently purchased my Planet tank from Oceanlife and was very surprised at how affordable it was. I am very pleased with mine. I know there are at least 4 shops in Houston who can order from Planet. And they get them relatively quickly so you can get it up and going. Good luck, and glad ya saved the day!!

That was exactly what I was worried about when I was informed of a crack under my redsea tank. So sorry to hear what happened. That sounds like a nightmare to deal with. My husband is very supportive with my shroom hobby but there is one rule we go by, never buy used equipment. I tossed the redsea and just put an order in with Urban Aquatics for a custom 300 gal PA system. When the issue with the crack in my precious redsea tank came up I was told no place in a reef tank is a good place for a crack, especially one with large volume. I’ve had major issues with another ‘reputable’ LFS with quality control and customer service. Unfortunately the only person I trust is David at UA for a job like this.
